Old 1927 Mulled Wine Recipe
I recently came across a mulled wine recipe from 1927 in The New York Post and I thought, sure well have to give it a go? You can use any old wine from the shops for this but buying a bottle ready-made can be pricy. Have a look around and you might learn how to make your own.
Anyway, here’s how we’re doing it.
Ingredients (per bottle of wine)
- 1 bottle of wine (any old shop-bought wine will do)
- A bit of sugar (to taste)
- ½ stick of cinnamon
- 1 slice of orange
- A pinch of cloves
- Zest of ½ a lemon
Bits you might need:
Instructions
- Heat the wine gently. Pour the wine into a pot and warm it over low heat. Be careful not to bring it to a boil
- Add a bit of sugar to taste.
- Add the spices. Throw in the cinnamon, orange slice, cloves, and lemon zest.
- Mull away. Let everything mull together for about 45 minutes.
- Strain and serve. Remove the spices and pour into mugs or glasses. Then drink away
Tips & Notes
- Don’t rush it, keeping the wine warm (not boiling) is key to preserving its flavour.
- Adjust sweetness to your liking.
- For an extra kick, add a splash of brandy or a few star anise pods.
There you have it: a little taste of 1927, perfect for a cozy evening or festive gathering.
